The temperature outside dropped to -50 degrees. Catchers searched for stray dogs around the city and did not hesitate to pour out their anger and irritation on animals. The townspeople, through whose fault homeless animals appeared on the city streets, only praised the work of the traps and encouraged their cruelty.
This week will forever be imprinted in Bella’s memory. They saw how people catch her friends, how they treat them cruelly, heard their crying, which was a plea for help. The dog was afraid that the same fate would befall her, but it was no better outside because of the severe frosts. Being a tall dog, Bella could not find a safe hiding place for herself.
The animal spent a week under trucks, hiding from traps. When people approached, the thin dog dived under the cars and hid behind the wheels. During these moments, Bella tried not to even breathe, fearing that people would notice her. All this time, Bella could not find food for herself, she lived solely on the snow that she ate to quench her thirst. Every minute the dog became weaker, she understood that soon she would not have the strength to run away and hide. In a fit of desperation, the dog climbed into the man’s car, taking advantage of the fact that he had left the doors open. The man was surprised when he saw an uninvited guest in the cabin, but noticing that the dog was very weak and not at all aggressive, he decided to let her warm up in the car.
While Bella was warming up, the man looked for my number, he thought that I was in Yakutsk. As it turned out, he saw Bella several times during the week when she was hiding from capture. The man agreed to take care of the dog for a week while we wait for the plane, however, the best he could offer was to keep Bella on a leash in the yard. Frost and exhaustion led to the fact that the dog suffered both from hypothermia and a whole bunch of concomitant diseases. I managed to find local volunteers who took care of the dog until we could fly it to Moscow.
After the flight, Bella ended up in the hospital of the capital’s clinic for a long time. Doctors and volunteers managed to put the dog on its feet and cope with all its diseases. Outwardly, Bella looks like an alabai. She is a very affectionate, cheerful and quick-witted dog. 9 months after the dog came under our care, it is simply unrecognizable. She gained weight, became active and cheerful, beautiful and kind. Bella does her best to show her gratitude for the rescue, because she thought that that winter would be her last.
