A cat named Scarlet hit the front pages of newspapers in 1996. At the beginning of spring, she became the mother of five kittens, she lived with them in an abandoned garage in Brooklyn. When her babies were only a month old, the garage caught fire at night. Someone set fire to the building on purpose, when firefighters arrived, they saw that there was a cat next to the burning building, which several times rushed into the burning building and ran out of there.
Rescuers decided to catch the cat, which risked its life by approaching the fire, but the animal was able to escape from people. When the cat once again ran out of the fire, one of the rescuers saw that it had a small kitten in its teeth. mother took the baby away from the fire and hiding from people, returned to the epicenter of the fire.
The cat risked her life, each time going to the very epicenter of the fire, her muzzle was burned, burns appeared on her eyes and ears, but she was able to save all her babies. Mom could only pull the kids out of the fire one at a time, so she returned to the burning garage five times, not paying attention to the fact that the flame flared up more and more.
By the time the cat went for the last baby, she was already badly hurt. The animal had burns on its paws and muzzle, its eyes were bubbling from high temperatures, but it still returned for the baby. After moving all the kittens to a safe place, the cat once again poked each of them with her muzzle, making sure that they were alive, after which she collapsed to the ground exhausted. One of the firefighters noticed that the cat was injured and lost consciousness, he immediately took the animal to the veterinary clinic.
The doctors managed to do the almost impossible – they saved Scarlet. In the first days after the fire, the cat looked terrible, but gradually her scars began to heal and become covered with hair.
An article about the cat’s act appeared in one of New York’s most popular newspapers, after which readers began to write and call the editorial office, offering their help to the animal.
