“We don’t need her”: the owners did not feed or treat the 14-year-old shepherd dog due to uselessness

A post appeared in one of the Kursk publics, which resonated with many citizens. Unfortunately, manifestations of empathy were limited to sympathetic and indignant comments, but did not prompt the townspeople to act. The post was dedicated to Gerda, an age-old dog that her owners did not care about at all.

Gerda lived from hand to mouth, we learned about this later, she was also clearly ill and did not receive any treatment. The dog was not allowed into a warm room even for a few minutes, although the cause of its health problems was constant hypothermia. Gerda served her masters for 14 years, but after she got old, they got a new pet, and Gerda was left to die quietly on the street, chained.

When the volunteers talked to the owners of Gerda, they behaved as if it didn’t concern them at all, as if it were a question of someone else’s animal. The girls asked to let Gerda at least into the corridor, because during the treatment she had to be warm, but in response they received misunderstanding and even indignation: “If you are so worried about her, take her, treat her, keep her warm. We don’t need her anymore, she’s useless, especially if she needs to be kept in the house!”

Volunteers turned out to be powerless, because the owners were not going to take care of the dog, and the girls simply did not have money for treatment, as well as places for overexposure or curators who would be willing to help. The girls called me, I could not refuse Gerda, who for many years of her devotional service received neglect in return.

Unfortunately, we also have a huge problem with warm overexposure and I didn’t see a possible solution to the problem. To begin with, we managed to agree that Gerda would spend several days in the veterinary clinic. I paid for the help of doctors, food, bowls, diapers and everything else that she needs in the first place.

Gerda turned out to be a very kind dog that accepts any attention with gratitude. Even painful procedures that she obviously does not like, she endures steadfastly and with gratitude in her eyes, which is replaced by real pleasure, as soon as the stern appears in her field of vision. Gerda is sociable and patient, in her life she is so used to being content with little that she responds to care with a huge amount of love and tenderness.
Doctors are making efforts to help Gerda, I would like to believe that years of neglect have not caused irreparable harm to her health and we will be able to put her on her feet.
